The 4 myths about being a diving instructor are real!
It can be all sun and fun!
It can be an easy job!
You can make money!
Anybody can do it!
According to simply scuba’s, YouTube channel, Saturday Surface Interval that being a diving instructor can be all sun and fun, an easy job, where you can make money and anybody can do it, are all myths!!! See below to watch the video.
at The Waterhoppers we don’t believe that to be true! It all depends on where you work, who you trained with and where you live.
MYTH – ALL SUN AND FUN
According to the video they say it can be all sun in the fun! Most people see dive instructors doing just a fraction of what they do, this is true. Especially here on Rhodes as it’s known as the island of the sun and a great place to have a summer of fun.
Surface Interval says, days start very early, they end quite late and you are working all the time throughout. This can be true, but again it all depends on where and who you work for. On Rhodes we start on the boat in Mandraki harbour at 8am, departing at around 9am and return around 4pm (and we have a lunch break).
Surface Interval says, as diving instructors, you are responsible for a lot and there are a lot of moving parts that you need to consider during the day whilst out in the water. Making sure that everyone has everything that they need and everything is going to run smoothly all sits on the shoulders of the instructor. False!
On The Waterhoppers boat you have the time to get the equipment together, before departure as the equipment is all stored on the boat, we also have staff assigned to put equipment together in a team-teaching environment. Then you can brief your students within the 40 minutes to the dive site, so you can be super relaxed and look well organised.
Surface Interval says, you need to head back to the Dive Center to sort out gear and wash it down. Again false!
On The Waterhoppers boat all the gear is washed down and put away on the way back to the harbour by the team, so if you need to debrief students or do paperwork you can. As for the tanks they come off, filled in the evening and returned next morning. So no tank filling unless you want to.
MYTH - IT’S AN EASY JOB
Surface Interval says, being an instructor is both mentally and physically draining. If you don't have an army of divemasters to help move dive equipment and gear is heavy. Yes, it could be if you were doing everything by yourself. On The Waterhoppers boat we are lucky to work within an amazing team who work together to make our guests days amazing and an easy working day for all staff.
MYTH – WE MAKE LOTS OF MONEY
Surface Interval says, you don't teach for the money. You do it because we love diving, you enjoy teaching others how to dive and that can be one of the problems.
False! It all depends on who you work for and where you live, It’s all relative! Ideally you want to spend less than 25% of you monthly wage on rent, then you can save money and still have a fun time. And yes, you’ve guessed it, it’s possible to do that on the Island of Rhodes.
MYTH – ANYONE CAN DO IT
Surface Interval says, anybody can sign up and pay for the instructor course, pass the test just by jumping through the hoops, but not everybody can be a good dive instructor. You need to be completely comfortable and have confidence in the water. This is somewhat true, but you can be shown to you by others who have experienced already. So, when you become a PADI instructor, you have all the skills, confidence and experience to be the best of the best.
So, if you want Fun in the Sun, working in an easy environment, where you can make money and be the best of the best. Why not join The Waterhoppers this April 10th to 19th for the 2022 instructor development course and IE, what’s stopping you!
